Tips and tricks for flawless wedding pictures

I was recently asked by In With Skin Magazine to provide some tips, from a photographer’s perspective, for brides to ensure they have flawless photos that will last a lifetime. Check out this month’s special wedding issue which is chock full of ideas for your wedding.

Timing is everything:
When preparing your ceremony timeline, plan to have your portraits taken during the golden hour before sunset. This is the time of day when the light is softest, and everything is blanketed in a beautiful warm glow.

Let go:
Try not to stress out too much on your wedding day! This may seem obvious but the more relaxed and excited you are the better the pictures. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Your wedding is going to be amazing no matter what happens.

Add color:
Think of the bouquets and boutonniere as a splash of color in the pictures. I love it when couples have fun with their flowers.

Stay true:
Keep your hair and makeup true to your own style. You will want to look back at your photographs and see your most beautiful self not a stranger.

Look your best:
Get rest the night before the big day and make sure you are hydrated. The better you feel, the better you will look.

Be spontaneous:
Relax, be yourself and go with the flow. Some of my favorite photos are the ones that happen spontaneously. As a photographer, my goal is to be as unobtrusive as possible and to capture those moments that make your wedding special and unique.

Natalie and Jeremy’s Scottsdale, Arizona wedding

Natalie and Jeremy were married in a beautiful ceremony at Scottsdale Congregational United Church of Christ. This is a couple that loves color! The bridesmaids all had the same dress in different colors, sapphire, ruby and emerald, with matching flowers and the groomsmen each had a different color kilt for the occasion.

Vanessa and Kelly’s Secret Garden Wedding- Phoenix, Arizona

During our engagement shoot last spring Vanessa and Kelly had warned me that they were going to have a rowdy crowd and it turns out they were right. This is the first wedding I have been to that involved tailgating in the parking lot with a tent, beer pong, a mini grill cooking bratwurst and steak, and a TV!

Vanessa and Kelly were married at the Secret Garden in Phoenix on a warm October afternoon. Vanessa and I share a love of sunflowers so I just adored her bouquet and her bridesmaids bouquets that featured mini sunflowers and roses!

Eco-Chic Weddings

I am happy to announce that I am now a member of the Green Bride Guide, the #1 green wedding website! The Green Bride Guide helps couples choose local vendors that are eco-friendly and committed to leaving as small a footprint as possible. The website has a lot of cool tips and ideas about choosing vintage accessories,  registering for green gifts, recycling/donating food and other goods after the wedding and much more. I believe it is my responsibility as a photographer and a citizen to recycle and reduce waste in both my personal and professional life.

Wedding Photojournalists Association

Wedding Photojournalists Association

I am so excited to have been accepted as a member of the Wedding Photojournalists Association (WPJA)! The WPJA is an international, membership-based organization representing professional photographers skilled in the documentation of weddings and events in a candid, unobtrusive style. The WPJA has strict membership standards regarding image quality and content, technical and creative technique, website and marketing professionalism, business ethics and communication.

The Wedding Photojournalists Association embodies everything I believe in with my photography and what I strive for on a daily basis. My goal as a wedding photographer is to capture real moments as they happen. I will never make you freeze frame a moment or unnaturally “cheese” for the camera. The only time I will tell you what to do or where to stand is during the formal portraits. I want the bride and groom to be themselves and with a photojournalistic style I can capture the life and spirit of the day as it unfolds.
