Make the most of your engagement photo session

As the weather in Phoenix finally drops out of the triple digits I start to got more and more requests for engagement photo shoots. Engagements are one of my favorite things to photograph because it is all about having fun and the only goal is to take lots of good pictures. I include an engagement session in most of my wedding packages because I find it is a great way for me to get to know you and for you to see how I operate behind the camera.

The majority of my couples have never had professional photos taken (beyond their yearbook photo) so don’t worry if you think you will be awkward or uncomfortable in front of the camera. You are not alone. I encourage engagement sessions in part to get any of that insecurity out of the way before the wedding.

Here are some tips, ideas and information to help you get the most out of your engagement session.

  • Think about the location. Where did you meet your fiance? Can we incorporate that location into your pictures? Do you have a favorite coffee shop or hiking trail? I always love to include anything personal or sentimental into your photographs that will make them unique and reflect your personality as a couple.
  • Include your pets. My Boston Terrier is like our first baby so I know how much those four legged fur balls are part of the family.
  • Do a makeup trial run before your engagement session. You will feel and look beautiful and your photos will be that much more stunning.
  • Wear solid colors or fabrics with rich textures. I recommend staying away from loud prints that will look distracting in a photograph. All the attention should be on how great you look together not a crazy shirt with some giant logo on it.
  • You and your fiance certainly don’t have to match but do consider how the colors you are both wearing will look in a photograph. Think about different shades of the same color, complementary colors or neutrals with colorful accessories and shoes.
  • Feel free to bring a change of clothes. Jeans and a t-shirt are perfect for a more casual feel. A dress with heels and your groom in a crisp button down will create a more formal or dramatic image. Of course always let your own unique style shine through.
  • Bring comfortable shoes. I like to walk and explore during my engagement shoots and I never know where I might see really amazing light so please be prepared to do a little walking. This could mean having a pair of flip flops in your purse so you are not stuck in 6 inch heels tromping around the desert.
  • Feel free to share your ideas before the shoot and bring props if you want something specific included in the pictures.
  • Plan ahead. I am often asked when we should schedule the shoot and the answer depends on what you are going to use the pictures for. If you are planning on using them for a “save the date” or for the invitation then it would be helpful for me to know when you need to send it to the printers so I can be sure to get you the edited images on time.
  • My engagement sessions generally take about 1.5- 2 hours. I am also more than happy to travel outside of the valley for pictures. Sedona and Flagstaff are two popular locations and if you have other ideas just let me know.

Wedding tips- do your homework

Do your homework before you schedule a consultation with any potential photographer for your wedding. Take the time to really think about what you want from your photographer and what sort of images you love to look at. Are you drawn to a particular style of photography? Do you love big bold color and highly posed images or do you like a more soft and natural photograph? Flip through wedding and fashion magazines to get inspired. Spend an afternoon or a week poking around blogs and websites of the wedding photographers in your area. There are many different kinds of photographers out there each with their own style and expertise. The more educated you are the easier it is going to be to narrow the field and find just the right person to document your wedding. If you go into the consultation having thoroughly researched the photographer ahead of time I guarantee you will have a much more productive meeting. It is exciting when you find that person you know you can trust to tell the story your wedding.

Scouting portrait locations for weddings and engagements

Finding those perfect spots for pictures is part of the fun and challenge of wedding and portrait photography. Unless a couple has a specific idea of where they want their engagement pictures taken they often look to me for ideas. I have an ongoing list of new locations I want to try out as well as an archive of places I love to shoot. Every couple is different and I want the location to speak to them whether that means colorful pictures at the state fair, a rustic desert landscape or something more personal like the bookstore where they met.

Choosing a location for portraits on the day of the wedding is a little bit different because generally there is a time constraint and multiple family members to coordinate with. The best thing your photographer can do is scout the location for the portraits ahead of time. This will eliminate wasting time trying to figure out a good backdrop for the family and bridal portraits on the day of the wedding. I like to pick one or two spots for the family and bridal party pictures and a handful of locations for the the portraits of the bride and groom. Sometime a beautiful stone wall is all you need as a background. It is also always helpful to know when the sun will set and where the perfect vantage point is to capture it at any wedding venue.

Tips and tricks for flawless wedding pictures

I was recently asked by In With Skin Magazine to provide some tips, from a photographer’s perspective, for brides to ensure they have flawless photos that will last a lifetime. Check out this month’s special wedding issue which is chock full of ideas for your wedding.

Timing is everything:
When preparing your ceremony timeline, plan to have your portraits taken during the golden hour before sunset. This is the time of day when the light is softest, and everything is blanketed in a beautiful warm glow.

Let go:
Try not to stress out too much on your wedding day! This may seem obvious but the more relaxed and excited you are the better the pictures. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Your wedding is going to be amazing no matter what happens.

Add color:
Think of the bouquets and boutonniere as a splash of color in the pictures. I love it when couples have fun with their flowers.

Stay true:
Keep your hair and makeup true to your own style. You will want to look back at your photographs and see your most beautiful self not a stranger.

Look your best:
Get rest the night before the big day and make sure you are hydrated. The better you feel, the better you will look.

Be spontaneous:
Relax, be yourself and go with the flow. Some of my favorite photos are the ones that happen spontaneously. As a photographer, my goal is to be as unobtrusive as possible and to capture those moments that make your wedding special and unique.
