My look back at 2011

Wyatt and I watch the fire during our first family camping trip.

I am not one for big New Year’s resolutions but I do like to take a little time to reflect at the last 12 months. This was a wonderful year both personally and professionally. I had the privilege of documenting the engagements, weddings and babies of some truly lovely couples many of whom I now consider friends. I photographed all kinds of people both famous and ordinary in my editorial work. I traveled all over Arizona from Nogales to the Navajo Nation for photographic assignments. I have been surrounded by love and friends and family and I know how lucky I am. Because I am a photographer the best way I know how to express myself is with pictures so here are some of my favorites from 2011. I tried not to go overboard but I really couldn’t help myself. Thank you and happy New Year.

Part of what I love about engagement sessions is finding unique and interesting locations for each couple.

So many gorgeous brides and grooms! The middle photo is from a magazine cover shoot I did in the spring (Click here to see more)

There is nothing sweeter than to photograph maternity and newborn photos for past clients and friends.

This was a spontaneous memorial outside the University Medical Center in Tucson the day US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot last January. Click here and here to read more about my experience photographing the aftermath of the tragedy.

I was seriously jittery in anticipation of photographing Stephen Hawking (left) and  I learned a ton about the Arizona/ Mexico border (right) during this shoot for Reuters. I have to say I get to do a lot of cool stuff as a freelance photojournalist.

Getting back out canyoneering was important to me after having Wyatt. Here my friend Eric rappels down Shake Tree Canyon.

Our trip home to Virginia to see my family.

These guys make me so happy!

Momma Michele

Baby Pictures

While I was home in Virginia a couple weeks ago I had so much fun meeting John, the 3-month-old son of my friend Michele. I have known Michele since preschool. We played soccer together starting when we were 6-years-old, we grew up as Indian Princesses with our dads and would spend countless hours playing together at each others houses. I always envied Michele’s collection of Barbies and Barbie cars, houses and clothes. I have a very clear wonderful memory of setting up every piece of her Barbie paraphernalia in Michele’s living room.

John is Michele and her husband Andy’s first child. It was really special to spend some time getting to know the little bundle of cuteness. Michele seemed happy and tired and enjoying her maternity leave. I look forward to watching John grow into and little man although it is sad to think of the Barbie wonderland going to waste.

Snow at the Grand Canyon

Snow at the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is a spectacular sight to behold. I have had a chance to visit the park on a number of occasions since living in Arizona. Each time I visit the canyon I have my breath taken away by its beauty and grandeur.  I have always wanted to see the canyon covered in snow. This week I got my wish. I tagged along with David while he was working on a travel story for the Arizona Republic. We drove up Monday and while David was shooting I went for a walk along the Rim Trail. The weather was cold but pleasant and there was some snow on the canyon but it was not exactly how I had envisioned the grand snow covered canyon. Monday night the Grand Canyon got several inches as we slept. Tuesday morning we woke to a picture perfect postcard better than I could have imagined. The powder white snow decorated the trees along the rim and wispy clouds hovered throughout the canyon. While David finished his travel assignment I walked around the south rim and took about a million pictures. Standing in one place the canyon would change before my eyes, as clouds would blow in and out, blue sky peaking through then abruptly disappearing.

Watercolors

This is one of my favorite nature photographs that I have taken in a while. It is the reflection of the blue sky far overhead, green trees and red sandstone walls at the bottom of a deep and dark canyon in Zion Nation Park. I saw the movement in the water after a friend walked through the pool. In that canyon pool I saw an abstract watercolor painting, a study in light and form.

Welcome

Briscoe my little Boston Terrier.
Hi, I am a freelance photographer in Arizona. I shoot wedding, portraits and events as well as news and sports for local and national publications.

I am an avid hiker and canyoneer, I am a book worm and an animal lover (currently those animals include an insane Boston Terrier and 4 cats that came with the house we bought). I have been married  4 years to an amazing photographer, David Wallace, who shares my passion for photography and the outdoors.

It is a privilege to capture the mood and atmosphere of each wedding I photograph while being the quiet observer. Because I have a background in newspaper photography I shoot every wedding as a story told through pictures. Each wedding is a unique and individual experience and I will work with the couple to fulfill their photographic dreams.

Oreo

Oreo, the only cat allowed in the house. He is such a cool & independent cat.
