Here comes the sun- Kelli and Jacob’s Ocotillo Wedding- Chandler, Arizona

Here comes the sun

Saturday began with the sky blanketed in heavy gray clouds. Driving over to the Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler the weather did not look promising as it started to rain. Kelli and her bridesmaids arrived at the resort to get ready and the rainy weather was definitely on everyone’s mind. While Kelli and the ladies were primping in one part of the club and Jacob and the boys were getting dressed in another area of the club the most miraculous thing happened, I went outside to check on the groomsmen and there was not a cloud in the sky. The weather was absolute perfection for the rest of the day! Kelli and Jacob were a blast to work with and I wish them nothing but a lifetime of happiness!

PS- I know all too well the stress of a rainy day wedding. When David and I got married in Maine the days leading up to the wedding were cold and rainy in July. It was only about 1.5 hours before the ceremony was scheduled to start did the sun finally shine through.

Ever After Florals

Ever After FloralsJen Colvin of Ever After Florals

How long have you been in business?
I have been a floral designer since 1995.

How did you get started as a florist?
I actually went to school to become an interior designer and couldn’t find a job right away. I ended up seeing a help wanted sign at a florist and went in to apply. They only needed part time help as a front store clerk answering phones and watering plants. A year later I was learning floral design and taking classes at Thunderbird Floral Design school. I ended as a master designer and managed that same flower shop for 5 years. I loved it!

What do you love about your job?
I love working with all different kinds of flowers. No two brides are alike, so I am pretty fortunate to always be doing something a little different each event. It is nice that I don’t do the same thing over and over each weekend.

What gets you excited about your work?
The outcome. I always love to see my finished designs and get excited for the brides to see it all. It is one thing to have it envisioned in my head or read it all in a contract, but to see it right in front of me makes me very happy. I love when my brides are happy too and I love when they send my professional photos of the designs. It makes it all come together.

Do you have a favorite flower, why?
Favorite flowers to work with on a wedding, orchids. They are stunning and beautiful alone or grouped together in a bunch. They last a long time and hearty.
Favorite personal flowers that I buy for myself, daffodils. They are bright & colorful, long lasting, and inexpensive.

What makes your business unique in the Valley?
I think my personality is unique. I am very happy and helpful to all my clients. I help them save money and give them ideas on cutting flower costs. Most designers wouldn’t do that.

How would you describe your style?
I would say that my personal style is shabby chic, garden, romantic. However, I love to do modern, clean line styles too. I have a wide range of styles that I can accomplish. That is part of being a master designer.

What advise can you give to a bride and groom about choosing a florist?
I suggest meeting with more than one florist. This way you have two quotes to go by and you can see which of the designers understands your vision best. Always choose the designer you have that gut feeling about.
