Eco-Chic Weddings

I am happy to announce that I am now a member of the Green Bride Guide, the #1 green wedding website! The Green Bride Guide helps couples choose local vendors that are eco-friendly and committed to leaving as small a footprint as possible. The website has a lot of cool tips and ideas about choosing vintage accessories,  registering for green gifts, recycling/donating food and other goods after the wedding and much more. I believe it is my responsibility as a photographer and a citizen to recycle and reduce waste in both my personal and professional life.

Digital Wedding Photography

Digital Photography

As a photographer I grew up in the darkroom, I had a darkroom in the basement of my parent’s house in Virginia and I ultimately chose the college I would attend (Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York) based on the fact that students had individual darkrooms and could work through the night if necessary. There is no better way to learn the fundamentals of photography then putting hours into the darkroom, hand processing your film and making your own prints. Recently I even got a tinge of nostalgia when I went over to a friend’s new apartment that has a built in dark room for both color and black and white processing and printing. Having said that I feel no desire to ever go back to the darkroom, I do not miss the smell of fixer in my skin and hair or being terrified of scratching my film.

Unless you spent your career using 4×5 chrome film (which I did not) I believe digital has become as good a quality as film. Going digital for your wedding means less waste, more freedom to get creative and a much faster turn around time for you to get your pictures (no processing and scanning negatives). Another advantage to shooting with digital is that it is a snap (pun intended) to turn any color photo black and white. All of my packages come with a DVD of images and prints can easily be purchased through a personal online gallery of your wedding.

Think Green- Eco Friendly Weddings

Green Weddings
When planning a wedding the decisions you have to make can seem endless. From the flavor of the cake to the song for your first dance, each detail is discussed and options weighed. In honor of the upcoming Earth Hour, 8:30pm- 9:30pm Saturday March 28, 2009, I though this would be a good time to talk about a few eco friendly options for your wedding. Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia with homes and businesses turning off their lights for one hour. There are now Earth Hour participants in 80 countries and 1429 cities and towns including Phoenix.
Going green can be as simple as throwing birdseed or blowing bubbles instead of rice or confetti on the newly married couple. Green can be choosing a dress made from organic natural materials such as hemp and silk. Green can be as easy as using recycled paper for you invitations, table cards and programs. You can also support the economy and the environment by shopping locally.
As a photographer I eliminate a lot of waste and expense by shooting with digital cameras instead of film. I am able to take more photos without worrying about how many rolls of film I will need to have processed. I recycle my ink jet cartridges and all waste paper. Online galleries (which I provide) of your wedding photos are also a great way to share your photos with your friends and family without having to burn a million CDs or print a ton of copies for everyone.

I would love to hear anything you are doing to make your wedding more environmentally friendly!
