Paula and David’s Royal Palms wedding- Phoenix, Arizona

Paula and David met on a cruise ship, a trip they were both on with their parents. A trip where everyone else on the boat was about 30 or 40+ years older them. A journey along the Mediterranean Sea is a pretty fabulous place to begin a relationship. Paula and David now both live in Washington DC so Arizona was a destination wedding for them and many of their guests including an whole contingency of family from Italy. During Paula and David’s engagement session last winter they kept me and each other laughing throughout the shoot so I knew their wedding was going to be fun. They had a unique plan for their day with a religious, and emotional, ceremony at Brophy Chapel for their close family in the early afternoon followed by a second ceremony in front of all their guests at the Royal Palms later in the day (with an In-N-Out Burger run in the middle). The historic Royal Palms is an exquisite venue for a wedding with meandering walkways around the property and views of Camelback Mountain towering above. Paula was an absolutely beautiful bride. In my previous engagement session blog post I wrote that David was rather handsome, but on his wedding day in a tuxedo and bow tie he was downright dashing. The party got going with music from the live band Sapphire Sky. One of my favorite parts of the party was when Paula and all her girlfriends danced their hearts out to Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone.” Thank you Paula and David for including me in your wonderful wedding!

Urban Farming in PHOENIX Magazine

I am always thrilled when I have the opportunity to shoot for PHOENIX Magazine. They do wonderful work and share interesting stories about our community. Photographing along side writer Wynter Holden we covered people involved in the urban gardening community around Phoenix- “Seeds in the City”.

I love the idea of edible backyard landscapes and I feel inspired to start one of my own after seeing all the possibilities. One of my favorite quotes from the story came from Kenny Barrett with Truck Farm Phoenix. He said “I didn’t know what a Brussels sprout plant looked like, and that bothered me.” I never really thought about that but on the first shoot I did for this project at the International Rescue Committee’s New Roots program I saw broccoli growing for the first time. What a simple idea- knowing what food looks like and where it comes from. I also learned about chickens while visiting Holly and Eric Figueroa and photographing their backyard chicken coop. I had no idea how beautiful and colorful eggs can be.

My first stop on my goal to gardening will definitely be Root Phoenix. I photographed The Urban Farm founder Greg Peterson early one morning at his latest project Root Phoenix, a community organization offering gardening classes among other things. His passion for growing the food you eat is contagious. Before I started this project I was talking with the photography editor at PHOENIX Magazine, who gardens himself, and he talked about how much fun his young children have in their garden and how they love to eat lettuce. As a mother to a toddler who now refuses to eat anything green that alone makes me want to get started already.

Pick up a copy of the May 2013 issue on newsstands now.

Renae and Garrett’s Foothills wedding reception

Renae and Garrett were married on the beach in Maui with their close family at their side. I had the fun job of photographing their Arizona wedding reception. It was a really great touch to show all the guests a short video of their Hawaiian wedding ceremony in the theater at Foothills Golf Club so everyone could witness Renae and Garrett’s vows from a few weeks earlier. Renae and and Garrett were dressed in their island wear for the party. Renae in a flowing light gown and Garrett in a white shirt, shorts and, for a lot of the evening, no shoes. Keeping with an island theme the signature drink of the night were Mai Tai’s, the table setting “cards” were written on sand dollars and the linen color was a shiny turquoise blue. Instead of a traditional wedding cake Renae and Garrett spoon fed each other Dairy Queen Blizzards. Towards the end of the night Garrett, who is a firefighter, was surprised by his friends with a Guadelupe Fire Dept truck showing up at the party lights ablaze.

Everyone watches Renae and Garrett’s vows on the big screen.

Addy and Joel’s vintage style wedding

I was in love with Addy’s choice of dress and flowers from the minute I saw them. Addy found a delicate vintage wedding dress from the 1950s and with a feather and tulle birdcage the look was perfectly fitting. The bow toes on all the groomsmen, as well as Joel’s tie were all custom made by a friend and created from Joel’s Hawaiian shirt collection. The yellow roses in Addy’s bouquet, a bouquet made by her mother- in- law, looked absolutely scrumptious and of course sunflowers are my favorite flower. The reception followed at Joel’s mother’s home. The backyard was decorated with bistro lighting, mason jars filled with flowers, burlap accents and a eclectic array of furniture.

Petria and Frank’s desert engagement session

I met Frank and Petria at a desert oasis in Goodyear for their engagement session. It doesn’t get much better than shooting in the raw Arizona desert with blue skies and a couple that likes to laugh. I look forward to their wedding in the fall!
